There are many natural products on the market for dogs that use essential oils. And you can find many DIY essential oil recipes for dogs online …

But are they safe?

This is the big question. And you need to be sure because not all essential oils are safe for your dog.

And it can be tough when you find conflicting information when you research them. So you can’t just grab your favorite oils and make your own natural dog products.

That’s why we reached out to Canine Herbalist, Rita Hogan. And she shared with us some DIY recipes that are safe for your dog.

Natural Flea Collar

Fleas are no fun for you or your dog. So this simple recipe can help you turn his collar into a way to deter fleas … without all those toxic risks of pesticide flea collars.

What you’ll need:

  • A standard cloth dog collar
  • 2 tbsp almond oil
  • 2 drops in total of flea repelling essential oils such as cinnamon, peppermint, and cedarwood. *If you choose to use a combination of oils, use one drop of each for a total of 2 drops. *


  1. Mix the oils together and apply them to the collar.
  2. Allow the mixture to dry before placing on your pet.

Calming Spray

Consider using this spray before and during stressful events. Such as holidays, car rides and visits to the vet.

Using this spray before she is stressed will help it work best.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 oz witch hazel liquid or vodka
  • 2 tsp red turkey oil also called sulfated castor oil
  • 5 oz of distilled water
  • 3  drops of Roman chamomile essential oil
  • 3 drops of Lavender essential oil
  • 12 oz spray bottle


  1. Mix witch hazel and castor oil together, add essential oils. Shake.
  2. Add distilled water
  3. Cover face and eyes of your dog with a cloth or hand.
  4. Shake and spray a light mist over your dog during times when she needs help settling.

Simple Shampoo

If your dog is due for a spa day reach for this shampoo to help keep his skin and coat happy.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 drops lavender essential oil
  • 1 tbsp Castile soap
  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 350 ml of water
  • 2 drops eucalyptus essential oil
  • bottle to store your shampoo in


  1. Mix all the essential oils into the castile soap and stir for at least two minutes.
  2. This oil and soap mixture to your bottle
  3. Add the water
  4. Shake the bottle each time you use the shampoo.
  5. Lather well on your dog when bathing and rinse well.

Remember you don’t want to shampoo your dog too often. This can strip the natural oils of his skin and disrupt the healthy bacteria that live there.

Doggy Deodorant

What you’ll need:

  • Spray bottle
  • 1/2 oz castile soap
  • 4 oz distilled water
  • 1/2 oz of white vinegar
  • Pinch of Himalayan salt
  • 4 drops lavender essential oil


  1. Mix soap and essential oils
  2. Mix vinegar and salt 
  3. Pour into an 8-ounce spray bottle 
  4. Add distilled water or filtered water
  5. Cap and shake
  6. Cover the face and eyes of your dog and spray on their coat to get rid of their dog odor.
